Thank you for your interest in the Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success (MS PHD’S®) Professional Development Program!

MS PHD’S offers the following two unique professional development programs!



New! The Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success in GEO REU (MS PHD’S–GEO REU) Professional Development Program


The MS PHD’S-GEO REU program is designed specifically for underrepresented minority (URM) undergraduates who have participated in a recent National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF REU) program in one of the following disciplines: Earth Sciences, Ocean Sciences, Polar Sciences, or Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences. Consideration will also be given to applicants who have completed REUs in other STEM fields (e.g. environmental engineering, ecology, computational mathematics, etc.) and who demonstrate strong interest in the geosciences and articulate potential benefits received as participants in this program.

Program Eligibility Requirements

  • Participant of a recent NSF REU in one of the following disciplines: Earth Sciences, Ocean Sciences, Polar Sciences, or Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences. Consideration will also be given to applicants who have completed REUs in other STEM fields (e.g. environmental engineering, ecology, computational mathematics, etc.) and who demonstrate strong interest in the geosciences and articulate potential benefits received as participants in this program.

The Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success in Earth System Science (MS PHD’S® ESS) Professional Development Program


The MS PHD’S ESS provides professional development experiences to facilitate the advancement of minorities committed to achieving outstanding Earth system science careers. We do this through a three phase programming structure involving mentoring, in-house professional development activities, conference and networking activities, workshops, interactions with scientific organizations and federal agencies, and virtual engagement.

2015 MS PHD’S ESS Application

Currently we are not accepting applications to the MS PHD’S ESS. Pending federal and private funding for the MS PHD’S ESS initiative, we anticipate soliciting new applicants in 2016. Please be sure to check back for updates!

For information on other professional development opportunities, please visit pathwaystoscience.org. PathwaysToScience.org is a portal website supporting pathways to the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Particular emphasis is placed on connecting traditionally underrepresented groups with STEM programs and resources, including funding and mentoring opportunities.
